Young children, especially girls look forward to light the Karthika deepam (Siva deepam; Vishnu deepam) so that the siblings will have long prosperous life. We must appreciate this noble ethical aspect of Hinduism and its deeper meaning. Sri Dattathreya and Parasu-Rama Jayanthi remind us about the importance of the Spiritual knowledge. The elderly Hindus are eager to undertake the Vaikunta Ekadasi vratha, one of the most popular festivals for the Vaishnavaites. For the Saivaites, we have the festival at Vaikom Siva temple a very ancient temple and the extremely ancient festival of Adra Darsanam (Thiruvathira) highly favored by young maidens and married women. Women observe the Thiruvathira vratham not for personal benefit per se but for the benefit of their husbands. The message is clear. Avoid selfishness. Do service for others. Benefit will naturally come to you. The worship of Sri Hanuman, the Devatha for Determination and Sri Ayyappa, the Devatha for protection, (at the end of Mandala Vratha period) shows the Hindu determination for noble behavior and ultimate victory. But remember no body will be taking you any where. It is your own solemn duty to 'take yourself, leap and land yourself into the bright realm of Spiritual awakening at the end of the Mandala Vratha '. The 41 days of the spiritual journey - Mandala Vratha - can be taken mentally without travelling even a nano-meter! Your mind has to change. Mentally travel to the very depth of the spiritual ocean. Help comes in many ways-prepare for the journey by worshipping Lord Siva, avoid ego - Sarpa dosha-Mannar sala Ayilyam, get proper guidance- Gita Jayanthi, be knowledgeable - Subrahmanya Shashti and surrender - Guruvayoor Ekdasi. We are advised to make use of each festival for this nice trip.
November is also the time for Thanksgiving.We all must be thankful to live in this great country of freedom, faith and opportunity. The hot sultry weather is slowly changing to a "feel good" cool weather. The period is very apt for relaxed mental contemplation. This month we come across two very popular, Deepavali and Sri Subrahmanya festivals, both stressing the greatness of nobility and the foolishness of evil tendencies.
During Deepavali celebration we light lamps (symbolic of spiritual wakefulness-knowledge) and take the "holy Deepavali" bath (symbolic of becoming pure, getting rid of our hate, ego and other evil tendencies). The glory of women is also stressed since the evil egotist Narakasura thought that no woman can subdue him. He put countless women in captivity and tortured them. But alas, finally got subdued by Sathyabama and Sri Krishna Bhagavan, who removed the dark veil of Maaya, showed us the brilliant light of spiritual wakefulness. Happy Deepavali to all of you. May you all get the Spiritual knowledge, guaranteed to all.
Soora Samhara, the conquering of the Asura Soora-Padman and his brother Tharakasura, both ferocious, magical and selfish tyrants, used to illustrate the ultimate victory of nobility over evil tendencies. The descentAvathara of Sri Karthikeya has been brilliantly described in the classical work "Kumara Sambhavam" by the immortal poet Kalidasa. Karthikeya swami is known by six popular names:

Karthikeya the one reared by krithika maidens
Shan-mukha - the six faced One (there are several explanations for the six faces; the most simple one is the one present everywhere-four sides, up and below)
Ganga-putraya- the one originating in the sacred Ganga.
Saravana the one originated in six Lotus flowers of the sacred Saravana whirl pool of the Ganga. Symbolically, this represents the rise of Kundalini sakthi.
Su-Brahmanya the one symbolic of the Brahman.
Sakthi Dharaya (Velayudhaya)- the sakthivel, the long sharp spear held by the Lord is indicative of deep, wide and sharp Jnana(knowledge). Remember Knowledge is power! There is nothing "magical" about the spear. The magical Asuras were defeated by supreme spiritual knowledge (Spear), as per the puranas.
Sri Karthikeya is one the most popular Devatha among Hindus and also among many scholars of Hindu Jyothish sastra. The Lord is lovingly praised as "MURUGAN", which is very meaningful.
Mu = Mukunda (Maha-Vishnu)}
Ru = Rudra (Shiva) } Su-Brahmanya
Ka = Kamalan (Brahmaji) }
N = last alphabet of the very ancient language Tamil.
The flag mast of the Lord is the roaring roosterindicative of Naada Brahman and the vehicle is the peacock indicative of the all pervading nature of the OHMkara! The Katha Upanishad says Ohm is indicative of the Supreme Brahman, that is beyond all things manifested and also not manifested, beyond forms, names, and definitions. Comprehend "OHM" and enjoy Bliss!
Our sacred scriptures are full with such beautiful symbolism and it is our duty to comprehend the real meaning behind each and every festival. Wishing you all, the very best!

<a id="Article_Link" href="#" onclick="'+'window.open('+"'resource/srinivasahsataamgathih.htm','','scrollbars=1, height=500,width=780')"+'"> <a id="Article_Link" href="#" onclick="'+'window.open('+"'resource/srinivasahsataamgathih.htm','','scrollbars=1, height=500,width=780')"+'">
Srinivasah Sathaam Gathih

Dr.Govinda Rangarajan
Lord Srinivasa the consort of SRI is worshipped all over the world by his devotees in the month of Purattasi, .....

<a id="Article_Link" href="#" onclick="'+'window.open('+"'resource/srikrishna.htm','','scrollbars=1, height=500,width=780')"+'"><a id="Article_Link"href="#" onclick="'+'window.open('+"'resource/srikrishna.htm','','scrollbars=1, height=500,width=780')"+'">
Sri Krishna At Guruvayur

Smt.Padma Reddy
Krishna is therefore one of the most popular of Vishnus incarnations.
